They hope that Trump will change Christians\u2019 life for the better in the future.An estimated 50,000 Christians returned home in Iraq in time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas after facing genocide at the hands of Islamic State (ISIS\/ISIL) jihadists who forced them out of their homeland in 2014, reveals the president of the Assyrian Aid Society branch in Iraq (AAS-I).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe hope the United States keeps its policy of saving Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"http:\/\/assyrianaidiraq.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">AAS-I<\/a>\u00a0President Ashur Sargon Eskrya told Breitbart News, noting that conditions have improved under U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18346 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zowaa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unnamed-1-1-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/12\/27\/isis-lost-most-caliphate-bulk-trump-took-gloves-off-military\/\">successes<\/a>\u00a0of the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS in Iraq and Syria made it possible for the\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/50000-iraqi-christians-return-nineveh-plains-after-liberation-from-isis-210555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">Iraqi Christians<\/a>\u00a0to form part of the nearly\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aina.org\/news\/20171225131518.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">two billion<\/a>\u00a0Christians who celebrated Christmas around the world this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, about 100,000 Christians remain displaced by ISIS, including an estimated 50,000 inside Iraq and 50,000 others in nearby Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and other countries, AAS-I President Ashur Sargon Eskrya told Breitbart News.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although \u201csecurity in general\u201d for ethnoreligious minorities in Iraq \u201cis now better than last year,\u201d ISIS still poses a \u201cthreat\u201d to Christians, declared Eskrya,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/12\/01\/top-u-s-official-islamic-state-global-reach-largely-intact-battlefield-losses\/\">echoing<\/a>\u00a0U.S. officials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The aid worker explained:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There is no comparison between now and when ISIS was in power \u2014 now is better in general. People have more hope. They were able to celebrate Christmas at their homes in liberated areas in Nineveh plain, but there are still other places people can\u2019t return home because of a lack of security, infrastructure, and destroyed homes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">n July, U.S.-backed Iraqi troops and their allies\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/07\/12\/top-u-s-general-iran-allied-militias-deserve-a-share-of-the-credit-for-hard-won-victory-in-mosul\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the liberation of Iraq\u2019s second largest city Mosul, once considered ISIS\u2019\u00a0largest bastion in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yet, only \u201ca few\u201d families have returned to the city \u201cbecause they have lost trust in the government and security forces,\u201d noted Eskrya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mosul is the capital of northern Iraq\u2019s Nineveh province \u2014 the historical homeland of the Christians in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Nineveh Plain, once home to the largest concentration of Christians and other religious minority groups in the region, is also considered the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/08\/13\/now-never-iraqi-christians-fill-pews-burned-churches-islamic-state\/\">cradle<\/a>\u00a0of Christianity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eskrya stressed that he is \u201ccautiously optimistic\u201d about the future of Iraqi Christians, one of the oldest Christian groups in the world. They hope that Trump will change Christians\u2019 life for the better in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Trump administration has already launched some activities to help Christians and other religious minorities who have been targeted by ISIS, and the efforts are a step in the right direction. We hope that [the] Trump administration will maintain its efforts to help Christians in Iraq resettle in their home again and provide protection to the Nineveh Plain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eskrya did point out that the Trump administration could do more to help Christians, noting,\u00a0\u201cThe activities to help Christians on the ground are still not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Martha Hudson, a longtime advocate for minority groups in Iraq who has repeatedly traveled to the country, also commended the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to help Christians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe Trump Administration is moving in the right direction by focusing on political solutions within Iraq and more broadly throughout the region,\u201d she told Breitbart News. \u201cWithout political solutions, there will be no security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cAdditionally, President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have expressed a strong commitment to helping Christians, Yezidis, and other minorities to return home,\u201d she added. \u201cFor several years, the minority communities have asked for direct support, and it seems that the Trump Administration agrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In October, Pence told attendees at the In Defense of Christians\u00a0summit\u00a0in Washington, DC, that Trump had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/10\/31\/usaid-to-fund-direct-aid-to-persecuted-christians-in-addition-to-not-instead-of-proven-un-partners\/\">ordered<\/a>\u00a0the U.S. State Department to directly fund persecuted Christians instead of paying for United Nations humanitarian programs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eskrya identified the ongoing friction between northern Iraq\u2019s autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Baghdad over the Kurds\u2019 ongoing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/09\/26\/iraqi-kurdistan-votes-yes-to-independence-despite-military-action-threats-from-neighbors\/\">independence<\/a>\u00a0efforts as a threat to Christians in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cSecurity in general now is better than last year, especially after ISIS\u2019 losses, but there are still other threats to the Christian region including the possible division of the Nineveh Plain between the central government in Baghdad, the KRG, or different groups of forces or militias,\u201d explained the humanitarian aid worker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Northern Iraq\u2019s Nineveh plain region lies outside of the KRG-controlled areas.
